Using CCTV As A Substitute?

Wireless security cameras can offer a lot of value and home protection. With many customers using them to keep an eye on their property, including front of house, back doors, driveways and garage or storage units. But given their flexibility and ease of remote access, could they be used to keep your little ones safe? Or act as a substitute as a baby monitor?

Technology can often be interchangeable and used for various on-the-fly tasks, however, it doesn’t mean it should be.

Why not to use CCTV as a baby monitor?

Angle/View

Generally, wireless CCTV can offer wide viewing angles to cover as much of your property as possible. The problem is, with baby monitoring you need a narrower focus on the child with a more focussed zoom.

Privacy

Baby monitors offer a quick and easy way to keep check on your baby and picks up audio/visual cues depending on the model. Wireless CCTV is effective for monitoring anything you want but as a substitute monitoring tool for children there is a risk. Wireless CCTV is run on an internal wireless network and there is always the possibility of it being hacked. Wireless networks can be incredibly useful but when it comes to privacy and your child, we’d recommend against using them for baby monitoring.

Temperature Sensors

Wireless CCTV generally has no heat sensor or tracking ability for temperature monitoring in the way baby monitors do. Some parents prefer the functionality to ensure their child is sleeping in a safe environment with the correct temperatures and wireless CCTV just won’t offer this.

Music

Some baby monitors have functionality to play lullabies or music to help calm the baby and send them to sleep. Wireless CCTV can provide one way comms (usually for alerting intruders, for example) but it’s not really ideal for baby monitoring.

Anything can be rigged to use for alternative applications but wireless CCTV, although being a great solution for overall security, just doesn’t offer the right tools for baby monitoring. It doesn’t mean however, that wireless CCTV can’t be used for protecting your family in more meaningful ways.

CCTV Security Advantages

Just some of the key applications include:

  • External monitoring for driveways and front doors
  • Garage and storage security
  • Internal house monitoring with motion sensor technology
  • Thermal security cameras for heat signature tracking
  • Remote monitoring when away from your property
  • Offsite storage for footage and remote access

Wireless CCTV camera setups can be extremely useful and certainly have the flexibility to be applied for different needs but despite recording capabilities and monitoring aspects which could be applied to child monitoring, there are better solutions available in those cases. Baby monitors are designed specifically for that use but CCTV systems are certainly flexible and can be used to bolster existing protections for your home to help keep your family safe.
