4 in 10 Brits Use DIY Security

In recent years, the rising crime rates across the United Kingdom have prompted a significant increase in the adoption of DIY home security measures by British homeowners. With burglary and property-related offenses on the rise, it is no surprise that more people are taking proactive steps to protect their homes and loved ones. According to a recent survey of 2000 British people performed by the Liberal Democrats, 4 in 10 Brits now rely on various DIY security solutions to enhance their home security systems across the UK.

One of the most popular and traditional methods of home security in the UK involves our furry friends: dogs. Dogs have been companions to humans for centuries, and their protective instincts make them excellent deterrents for potential intruders. The sound of a barking dog alone can send would-be burglars running. However, owning a dog requires a considerable amount of time, effort, and responsibility. From regular walks to proper training and socialisation, it’s essential to invest in their well-being to ensure they become reliable protectors. Many Brits have embraced dog ownership not only for companionship but also as a practical home security measure. Some 6% over the last year bought a dog in the hopes of using them as a deterrent. Following the COVID Pandemic there was an unfortunate uptake in pet ownership as many people found themselves at home, which then practically reversed itself a year later, with thousands of dogs being abandoned or returned as everyone went back to work.

Dogs can only offer so much protection though and they act more as a deterrent than an effective security solution should the worst happen.

Camera Doorbells: Eyes on Your Front Door

Advancements in technology have revolutionised home security and camera doorbells have become increasingly popular in the UK. These smart devices combine traditional doorbells with high-definition cameras, allowing homeowners to monitor their front doors remotely. With motion sensors and real-time video streaming, camera doorbells provide an added layer of security by capturing any suspicious activity.

Camera doorbells are not only a deterrent for potential intruders but also a valuable tool for gathering evidence in the unfortunate event of a crime. Almost 1 in 5 people have a Ring Doorbell system or similar technology installed and the ability to review footage and share it with law enforcement agencies can significantly assist in investigations, leading to higher chances of identifying and apprehending criminals.

Stronger Door Locks: Reinforcing the First Line of Defence

Modern security concerns have led to the development of stronger and more sophisticated locking mechanisms and Brits are increasingly investing in high-quality door locks that provide enhanced resistance to forced entry.

These upgraded locks are designed to withstand drilling, picking, and other common break-in techniques employed by criminals. They offer homeowners peace of mind, knowing that their doors are better equipped to resist unauthorized access. By reinforcing the first line of defence, stronger door locks act as a deterrent and significantly increase the time it takes for intruders to gain entry, often discouraging them from attempting a break-in.

Some 7% of people actually joined their local neighborhood watch group, with many of them installing CCTV systems as well. As crime rates continue to rise in the UK, it is now crucial for homeowners to be more aware and take proactive measures to protect their homes. The poll from the Liberal Democrats shows an interesting snapshot of Brits who are embracing these DIY security measures to keep their homes and loved ones safe.
